Thunderstorms are predicted for 7pm, around the match's scheduled end time.
England have experienced weather-related delays earlier in the tournament. Their warm-up win over Costa Rica in Orlando was delayed by an hour due to storms. Two of their first four group games—against Croatia in Dallas and DR Congo in Atlanta—were played under closed roofs. Rain in Boston and New Jersey for matches against Ghana and Panama did not cause stoppages.
The most recent delay occurred in the last-16 against co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City, where lightning and heavy rain pushed kick-off back by an hour. England won 2-0 despite playing most of the second half with 10 men after Jarell Quansah's red card.
Miami Stadium's Limited Weather Protection
Miami Stadium has a large open-air canopy installed during 2016 renovations, but it does not cover the playing surface or lower seating areas. According to US policy, matches must be delayed or suspended if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius. Players, coaches, and officials must return inside, and fans must evacuate the stands until the area is lightning-free for 30 minutes.
Thunderstorms rumbled through Miami from Friday night into Saturday, breaking around 6am local time with a balmy 28°C. The chance of rain at kick-off is around 50%, with storms expected later.
FIFA previously considered moving the Mexico match forward by six hours due to weather fears but abandoned the plan after backlash from teams and fans. England will hope for clear skies to avoid another disruption.
