India were bowled out for 233 in the second men's one-day international against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson taking three wickets each. Virat Kohli top-scored with 65 off 67 balls, while Shreyas Iyer made 66 off 63, but the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under England's disciplined bowling attack.
England Win Toss and Bowl First
England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that offered some movement for the seamers. The hosts made one change, with Saqib Mahmood replacing Liam Dawson, while India were without KL Rahul, who was indisposed.
India's innings got off to a steady start, with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill adding 44 runs in the first seven overs. However, Atkinson struck in the eighth over, having Gill caught by Ben Duckett for 31 off 29 balls. Rohit followed soon after, caught by Jos Buttler off Will Jacks for 24, leaving India at 104 for 2.
Kohli and Iyer Steady the Ship
Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then put on 74 runs for the third wicket, with Kohli reaching his 132nd ODI fifty off 56 balls. Iyer also scored a fluent half-century, but just as India looked to accelerate, England struck back through Archer, who had Kohli caught by Adil Rashid at third man for 65.
Archer's triple strike in the 35th and 36th overs turned the match decisively in England's favour. He first had Axar Patel caught behind for 1, then returned with a sharp catch to dismiss Shivam Dube for a golden duck, and finally saw off Gurnoor Brar, who top-edged to Atkinson for 7. India slipped from 178 for 3 to 193 for 7 in the space of 26 balls.
Bumrah's Late Flourish Not Enough
Jasprit Bumrah provided some late entertainment with a cameo of 20 off 14 balls, including three fours and a six, but he was the last man out, bowled by Atkinson for 0. India were all out for 233 in the 43rd over.
Archer finished with figures of 10-0-47-3, while Atkinson took 3 for 48 in 7.3 overs. Sam Curran was economical with 1 for 23 in 6 overs, and Saqib Mahmood claimed 2 for 34 in 8 overs.
"We bowled really well as a unit," said Archer after the innings. "The pitch was a bit tricky, but we stuck to our plans and got the rewards."
India will now look to their bowlers, led by Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, to defend the total. England need 234 to win the match and level the three-match series at 1-1.
