David Silva has come out of retirement and made a shock move to the Hong Kong Premier League. Silva, 40, retired three years ago following a serious knee injury picked up during his time at Real Sociedad.
The former Manchester City star is set to return to the pitch with Supreme Sha Tin, who have pulled off a stunning deal to bring Silva to Asia. Sha Tin are newly promoted to Hong Kong's top flight and appointed English manager Tom Ballantyne as their new boss earlier this week.
Decorated career at club and international level
Silva enjoyed a decorated career both at club and international level, winning the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain. His 10-year spell with City saw him lift 13 trophies, although those titles are now under scrutiny after the club were found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules — a verdict which they have appealed.
The midfielder will now be hoping for success with Sha Tin, who have been bankrolled by an innovative player-owner, Jim Wong Chi-chuen. The club have enjoyed a rapid rise to the Hong Kong Premier League, with Jim Wong telling the South China Morning Post that Silva could make his debut as soon as October 18, having signed a 'short-term contract'.
Club confirms arrival on social media
Sha Tin confirmed his arrival by posting on Instagram: "Yo! Absolute madness! We are officially announcing that the legendary Spanish No. 21 midfielder, David Silva, has officially joined Supreme Sha Tin!"
The club added: "David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut. Stay tuned!"
In a video message to Sha Tin's fans, Silva said: "Hello everyone, I'm David Silva. I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience; I'm really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people, and the food in Sha Tin - and the football in Hong Kong, of course. I can't wait to go, so I look forward to seeing you all soon. Best regards."
New season struggles and stadium renovation
Sha Tin are four games into the new season. They have won one and lost three of their opening four games, prompting the appointment of Ballantyne.
Silva's move follows reports that Sha Tin were pursuing ex-Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata. Sha Tin are currently playing their home matches at the 2,200-capacity Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground while their stadium is being renovated.
