Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes joined runners at Barry Island's latest Parkrun, adding a touch of elite competition to the seaside 5k event.
The double Olympic champion, who won the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Athens Games, is a regular visitor at Parkruns across the country. On Saturday, October 3, she took part in the scenic run along the Barry Island promenade.
A warm welcome at the seaside
While at the event, Dame Kelly chatted to runners and volunteers about why she supports the weekly event, which takes place across the globe. She also sampled homemade gelato at Zios Gelato and coffee at Marco's on the front.
Writing on Instagram, Dame Kelly said: "Everyone here were [sic] amazing. The volunteers are so warm and enthusiastic the Parkrunners/walkers lovely!"
Photos, dogs and a special milestone
She added: "I ran with a lady named Karen who was on her first lap to keep her company before I finished my 2nd. Had photos with nearly all the parkrunners/walkers, including lots of doggie pics. Loved the volunteers as always. I spoke with Jim Cox -710 parkruns My spot of the week!"
Marco's, a favourite of Gavin & Stacey star Larry Lamb, is known for its photo-op featuring Nessa and co. Dame Kelly said: "Obligatory coffee and cake were kindly given to us by an amazing guy Nino owner of Marcos Barry Island," adding that she also enjoyed "a fantastic homemade ice cream at Zios Gelato."
