Celtic and Rangers have been ranked among the top 40 best-supported clubs in European football, according to a new report from The European Club Talent and Competition Landscape, first spotted by Nutmeg Magazine.
The report shows SPFL attendances smashed through the four million mark last season, reaching a record 4.1 million. Scotland ranked seventh for total top-flight attendance, behind only England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands.
Record crowds and Celtic's elite status
The Premiership averaged 17,903 fans per game, with Scottish champions Celtic leading the way. The Parkhead giants averaged 58,553 for their home league matches, with their 60,000-capacity stadium the biggest football ground in the country.
Celtic were one of only 19 European clubs to surpass one million home league spectators, ranking 13th overall with 1,112,508. They were the only club outside Europe's traditional top five leagues to break the one-million barrier for home league attendances.
Rangers and cup final crowds
When domestic cup and European matches are included, Celtic's total rises to around 1.465 million. Old Firm rivals Rangers also joined an exclusive club, with the report showing they were one of only 36 teams across Europe to attract more than one million fans across all competitions. Ibrox holds around 51,700 fans.
The study also highlights the scale of the Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Dunfermline in May, with the 49,613 Hampden crowd making it the ninth-highest attended domestic cup final in Europe last season.
