Japan emerged with renewed energy after the restart, scoring through Kotaro Matsushima and Michael Leitch to cut the deficit to just two points at 19-17.
Australia responded with two quick tries from Fraser McReight and Tom Wright, extending their lead to 32-17 and seemingly putting the game beyond reach.

A late try from Japan's Siosaia Fifita set up a tense finale, but the Wallabies' defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the win.
