Scott McTominay has returned to training with Napoli just two weeks after undergoing successful heart surgery. The former Manchester United midfielder underwent a planned procedure for mild benign arrhythmia, a condition that causes the heart to beat too quickly, too slowly, or with an unsteady rhythm.
Recovery progress
The 29-year-old has missed the last four games in all competitions as a result of the surgery. In an update on their official website, Napoli confirmed: "The Azzurri continued training during the international window. The team took part in a morning training session, with exercises in the gym and change-of-direction drills on the pitch. Scott McTominay returned to the SSC Napoli Training Center and trained separately in the gym."
The club also shared a picture of the midfielder working on an exercise bike. Gazzetta dello Sport adds that he hopes to be available for the match against Frosinone after the international break.
Recovery timeline
The latest update aligns with the planned recovery time set out by Napoli director Giovanni Manna before the surgery. "It will take 28 days for sporting fitness because he will take anticoagulant drugs," he said. "For two weeks, the player will rest and then resume competitive activity without contact."
While McTominay will miss Scotland's Nations League matches against Slovenia, Switzerland, and North Macedonia over the international break, he could be back for the next competitive fixture. Napoli currently sit in ninth place in Serie A and have won just one of the matches that McTominay has missed.
Career impact
McTominay quickly established himself as a key player for the Italian side after making the £25.7million move from United in the summer of 2024. Since then, he has made 82 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals and providing 10 assists.
McTominay came through the academy system at Old Trafford, making his breakthrough to the first team at the end of the 2016/17 season. He went on to make 255 appearances, scoring 29 times and providing eight assists.
