Robert MacIntyre squandered a four-shot lead in the final round as world number one Scottie Scheffler produced a stunning chip to win the BMW Championship in Maryland. The Scot started Sunday with two bogeys, reducing his overnight advantage to a single stroke, and despite a valiant effort, he could not stop the American's momentum.
MacIntyre watched as Scheffler nailed a remarkable chip from the rough on the 17th hole to effectively seal victory. It was a bitter blow for MacIntyre, who had sunk a 41-foot putt on the final hole on Saturday to retain his lead. A win would have secured his place in Europe's Ryder Cup team.
MacIntyre made a nightmare start on Sunday, but Scheffler also struggled early, missing a putt that restored the Scot's two-stroke lead after three holes. The American levelled on the fifth after MacIntyre found a bunker, then moved two clear on the 13th. MacIntyre reduced the deficit again, but the 15th proved pivotal as he missed a birdie putt after Scheffler found a bunker.
After Scheffler's brilliant chip on the 17th, MacIntyre could not respond with more final-hole magic, putting out for a three-over-par 73. He finished two shots behind Scheffler's 15-under-par total of 265. 'He's hit a great shot,' MacIntyre said. 'Nothing you can do with that. I just didn't play good enough.'
Tommy Fleetwood shot a final-round 67 to tie for fourth, while Harry Hall fell away with a 70 to finish sixth. Rory McIlroy was hampered by back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes, matching Hall's 70 to finish tied for 12th.
