Gerrard saved Rangers security guard's job after leaked title video

Steven Gerrard has revealed he stopped Rangers from sacking a security guard who leaked dressing room footage of their 55 title celebrations at Ibrox.

The Light Blues were all but confirmed as champions with six games to spare after defeating St Mirren 3-0 on March 6, 2021, and were officially awarded the title the following day after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United, stopping their arch rivals from claiming 10 Premiership crowns on the bounce in the process.

Dressing room celebrations leaked

Following the victory over the Buddies, Gers players and staff had a title party inside the Ibrox dressing room, and a clip quickly emerged on social media of Liverpool icon Gerrard diving head first to slide across the middle of the room after being egged on by his players.

Rangers bosses were said to be furious with the leak and after an investigation, a security guard at the stadium was found to be the source of the video getting out.

Gerrard's intervention

And in a chat on the Open Goal podcast alongside Simon Ferry, Paul Slane and his ex player at Rangers Andy Halliday, England hero Gerrard has revealed how he managed to smooth over the fury from Ibrox chiefs and ensure the security guard kept his job.

Halliday asked: "There is a brilliant story from it and you can confirm if it's true or not. Obviously when stuff like that happens everything is supposed to be kept in house but that video got leaked. There was an investigation at Rangers and it turned out it (came) from a security guard. He was going to lose his job and apparently you stopped him losing it?"

To which Gerrard responded: "There were a few people who came down to the dressing room who were not happy about the video getting out and you felt from their demeanour that someone could have got into big, big trouble over it. So at the time, I thought 'how can I help this person?'. By trying to play it down a bit to the people that were spitting feathers. I just sort of said 'look, don't worry about it, we will deal with it.'

Enjoying the moment

"It wasn't nice but everyone is on cloud nine here. You have got to enjoy these moments because it had been tough. I was copying (the players) with the slide. I saw them doing it and thought 'I am going to have a go, they are all shouting my name and I can't let them down'.

"I had a go but went too far and nearly went into the bench. It's tough at the top and football is difficult so when you get your good moments you have got to enjoy them."
