Wales player ratings: Ampadu shines in Denmark defeat

Ethan Ampadu was the standout performer as Wales fell to a 1-0 defeat against Denmark in the Nations League on Sunday night.

Rasmus Hojlund's second-half penalty proved enough to seal victory for the visitors, who now sit second in the group on six points. Wales actually move off the bottom of the table after Norway's defeat to Portugal.

Goalkeeper and Defence

Danny Ward was rated 6 after making a costly error that ultimately decided the game, but he also produced two great saves of real quality to keep Denmark at bay.

Neco Williams also received 6, contributing well in possession with a couple of driving runs down the right, but he was given a torrid time defensively as Gustav Isaksen and Mohamed Daramy caused problems.

Ben Cabango was handed 6 after making some decent challenges and playing a couple of nice passes from the back that broke the lines, though he was not quite as solid as Thursday.

Ben Davies, rated 6, had a heart-in-mouth moment in the first half after catching Isaksen late in the penalty area, and was substituted. Jay DaSilva, also 6, played his side out of trouble a few times but was constantly caught out by the ball over the top and found it tough against substitute Andreas Skov Olsen.

Midfield and Attack

Ethan Ampadu earned the star man rating of 8, being so composed on the ball and mopping up superbly on the edge of his own area. No player made more tackles on the night, and he also made a few interventions that broke up promising Denmark moves.

Jordan James was rated 6, energetic as ever in the middle and good at bringing the ball out from the base of midfield, but a knock in the first half perhaps curtailed his night as his influence faded. He was substituted.

Sorba Thomas received 7, not quite as influential as the other night but still his side's most creative outlet, putting in several really good crosses that on another night might have been converted.

Liam Cullen, rated 6, was industrious in the final third and his pressing yielded a couple of promising moments, but he spurned a decent chance in the second half following a strong counter. He was substituted.

Brennan Johnson, also 6, got into some good positions and had a couple of sights at goal, but couldn't quite find the invention needed as the game wore on. He was substituted.

Lewis Koumas, rated 6, was a little too isolated at times. He worked hard, pressed well and linked up nicely with the rest of the front three, but sadly couldn't quite provide the focal point in the final third that was needed. He was substituted.

Substitutes

Mark Harris, on for Koumas in the 56th minute, put himself about well enough but didn't quite manage to have an impact, earning 6.

Josh Sheehan, on for James in the 56th minute, calmed things initially but couldn't quite bring the spark needed in the middle, also rated 6.

Joel Colwill, on for Cullen in the 76th minute, had nothing to take too much issue with but a quiet outing on the whole, rated 6.

Wes Burns, on for Johnson in the 76th minute, was similar, rated 6. Kieffer Moore, on for Davies in the 83rd minute, gave his side another dimension but couldn't find a breakthrough, also rated 6.
