Former Newcastle United and England winger Chris Waddle has warned that up to half of the Premier League clubs could be involved in a relegation battle this season, including the Magpies. Speaking to Snabbare, Waddle said he believes eight, nine or even 10 clubs could be fighting for survival.
Newcastle's summer of change
Newcastle have undergone a significant overhaul this summer, with CEO David Hopkinson branding the new era 'Newcastle 2.0' following a raft of new signings. While there is excitement about young talents such as Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, the departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier have raised concerns.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle is one of 10 new managers in the Premier League this season, following Eddie Howe's decision to step down. This turnover has created uncertainty about how clubs will perform.
Waddle's warning
Waddle identified several clubs he believes could be vulnerable, including Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Fulham. He said: "This season, I think eight, nine or even 10 clubs could be up for relegation. I think the three teams who have come up, Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town, will fancy their chances because they won’t be the only sides struggling."
He added: "Nottingham Forest haven’t kicked on. Crystal Palace aren’t buying anybody of note. Newcastle United have got rid of their best players. Will Sunderland perform like they did last season, with European football to deal with too? Bournemouth and Fulham have both got new managers so the jury is out on them."
Season opener
Newcastle begin their campaign against Liverpool on August 23, followed by a difficult away trip to Tottenham, then matches against Bournemouth (H), Leeds (A) and Hull City at home before the first international break.
