When Manchester City departed for their Asia tour on Tuesday, there was a sense that some players would not be returning on the flight home and that new faces could be on board. Yet with sporting director Hugo Viana having flown out to join the squad, it now appears possible that the passenger list from Seoul will be identical.
The optimism that surrounded a number of incomings and outgoings a few days ago has faded. City remain active - the signing of Geronimo Rulli is expected to be completed as a replacement for the departing James Trafford - but there has been little visible progress on the bigger deals.
Bouaddi pursuit hits resistance
That includes the attempt to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille's president has spoken publicly to reiterate the club's desire to keep the player, unless they receive the asking price in negotiations.
Asia could aid negotiations
Viana's decision to join the tour is noteworthy given the timezone is far from ideal for business with England and Europe. However, Chelsea and Tottenham are also on pre-season tours nearby, and both could do business with City this summer.
Tottenham continue to expect to sign Savinho, while Omar Marmoush has emerged as a target. Malo Gusto, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez remain potential options for City. It is understood that Viana has linked up with the squad in his role working alongside manager Enzo Maresca and as a club figurehead, but the location could still prove useful for certain negotiations.
Deadline approaching
Viana is aware that less than a month remains before the transfer window closes, and there is still much to be done. The lack of activity in recent weeks should not be interpreted as a sign that City believe there is less to do.
One situation providing relief is Rodri. After a week in which Real made clear their interest in signing him, nothing has progressed. It is now just over a week until City return to Manchester and begin welcoming back their final World Cup stars.
As City prepare to head to Korea, their transfer plans are in need of take-off.
