Tottenham Hotspur suffered another damaging defeat on Thursday night, falling 2-1 to West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The loss not only extended their winless run but also saw them set an unwanted Premier League record.
Cristian Romero headed Spurs into an early lead after just 11 minutes, but the hosts failed to build on their advantage. Two defensive errors in the second half allowed Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse to score for West Ham, turning the match on its head.
This defeat means Tottenham are the first side in Premier League history to fail to win five consecutive games despite going 1-0 up in all of them. They are also the first team to lose three home games in a row after opening the scoring.
Manager Ange Postecoglou did not mince his words after the match. 'There's no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, looking for a cuddle anywhere,' he said. 'There's only one way to change our circumstances and that is to come here on Sunday and put in a performance.'
Postecoglou criticised his team's performance in both penalty areas, stating, 'I thought we were really poor in both boxes tonight – both with our finishing and both goals were terrible to concede.' He added that a good performance would have seen them 3-0 or 4-0 up at half-time.
Spurs now face a daunting trip to Newcastle United on Sunday, with Postecoglou calling for his side to show conviction and turn their fortunes around.
