England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has acquired a 1.2% stake in The Hundred franchise Birmingham Phoenix, with the deal valued at more than £800,000. The 22-year-old, who grew up in Stourbridge and began his football career at Birmingham City, said he felt he owed the city something after the upbringing it gave him.
The investment is split equally between parent club Warwickshire and American investment partners Knighthead Capital, each selling 0.6%. The Phoenix franchise was valued at approximately £82 million when Knighthead acquired a 49% stake during the sales process initiated by the England and Wales Cricket Board last year.
Bellingham, who played junior cricket for Hagley in Worcestershire, said he loved cricket and jumped at the opportunity to get involved. He emphasised the importance of providing sporting opportunities for children in Birmingham, whether in football or cricket, and hopes his involvement can shine a light on different avenues for young people.
Warwickshire chief executive Stuart Cain welcomed Bellingham's involvement, noting his understanding of high-performance sport and the positive role sport can play in young people's lives. The club looks forward to working with him on community initiatives.
Birmingham Phoenix's women's team, led by Australia great Ellyse Perry, and men's team, captained by rising talent Jacob Bethell, begin their Hundred campaign at home on 24 July, with the final at Lord's on 16 August.
