Jim Furyk has been appointed as the US Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland, the PGA of America announced on Friday. Furyk, who previously led the team in 2018, becomes the fourth US captain since 1979 to take on the role for a second time.
The decision came after Tiger Woods withdrew himself from consideration following his arrest on 27 March on suspicion of driving under the influence. The PGA of America had set a soft deadline for the end of March for Woods to decide, with a backup list of candidates prepared.
Furyk's 2018 captaincy ended in a 17½-10½ defeat to Europe at Le Golf National. However, he led the US to victory in the 2024 Presidents Cup and served as an assistant to Keegan Bradley in the last Ryder Cup. “The opportunity to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup Team for a second time is a tremendous honor,” Furyk said.
Europe have won 11 of the last 15 Ryder Cup matches, including a dominant performance at Bethpage Black in 2025. Captain Luke Donald will seek a third consecutive victory at Adare Manor in September 2027. The US have not won on European soil since 1993.
