Josh Magennis scored an injury-time winner as Stevenage beat Wycombe 2-1 in the Carabao Cup first round on Friday. The Northern Irish international, 35, who joined from Exeter City this summer, headed home in the fifth minute of added time to break Wycombe hearts at Adams Park and ensure a winning start to the competitive season for Alex Revell's side.

On the same night, Wolves comfortably saw off League Two side Port Vale 3-0 at Molineux, while Middlesbrough defeated Wrexham 1-0 in an all-Championship affair in the other two Carabao Cup games.

Both Wycombe and Stevenage gave debuts to new signings. The hosts started goalkeeper Conor Hazard, winger Silko Thomas, right-back Sam Parker, and veteran defender Steve Cook, while the visitors gave a debut to former Burton defender Terence Vancooten.
The game was slow to ignite, with little to shout about in the opening 25 minutes as both sides failed to convert several crosses. However, Dan Kemp broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark, pouncing on a poor touch from Wycombe defender Connor Taylor before rounding his man and firing into the near bottom corner.
Stevenage could have doubled their lead within a minute as they countered at pace, but winger Phoenix Patterson could only fire low and hard into Hazard's arms. Wycombe leveled in the 39th minute when Ewan Henderson played a neat one-two with Thomas before finding the bottom left corner.
Wycombe ended the first half the better side, though Kemp came close to doubling his and Stevenage's tally with a piledriver from the edge of the box that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out.
Second Half and Late Drama
The Chairboys continued their positive play into the second half, with Fred Onyedinma causing problems down the right and several penalty shouts waived away by referee Jamie O'Connor. Debutant Thomas also troubled Stevenage's defense, but Wycombe could not find a way through.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the final stages, but it was Magennis, fresh off the bench, who popped up with a header in the dying seconds to win the game and book Stevenage's spot in Monday's second round draw.

Both sides are next in action on the opening day of the League One season next weekend, when Wycombe travel to face Blackpool and Stevenage face Burton, both on Saturday, Aug. 15 (3 p.m.).
