Cristiano Ronaldo Misses Al Nassr Game Amid Transfer Frustrations
Cristiano Ronaldo was once again absent from the Al Nassr squad for their AFC Champions League Two last-16 first leg clash against Arkadag in Turkmenistan. However, the Portugal captain was pictured training at the club's base in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday morning, as confirmed by Al Nassr's official social media accounts.
Transfer Discontent Fuels Absence
The 41-year-old football icon is believed to be deeply upset by Al Nassr's lack of activity during the January transfer window. This discontent has reportedly led to his absence from the last two Saudi Pro League matches, against Al Riyadh and Al Ittihad. In a show of solidarity, fans raised yellow signs featuring Ronaldo's name and iconic number seven during the seventh minute of the match at Al-Awwal Park on Friday.
Ronaldo's frustration stems from the Saudi Public Investment Fund's failure to invest in Al Nassr during the winter transfer period. In contrast, rivals Al Hilal, which is also 75 per cent majority-owned by the PIF, secured a significant signing by bringing in Karim Benzema from Al Ittihad. Benzema is a former Real Madrid team-mate of Ronaldo, adding to the perceived competitive imbalance.
League Issues Warning Amid Tensions
The Saudi Pro League has responded to the situation by issuing a stern warning, emphasising that no individual, regardless of their stature, can dictate decisions beyond their own club. This statement underscores the league's commitment to maintaining organisational integrity and preventing player influence over broader club or league policies.
Despite not being included in the matchday line-up for the crucial AFC Champions League fixture, Ronaldo's training session in Riyadh indicates he remains physically engaged with the team. Al Nassr's next league match is scheduled for Saturday against Al Fateh, and it remains uncertain whether Ronaldo will feature as the club navigates this period of internal tension.
