Cristian Romero scored a dramatic stoppage-time overhead kick to earn Tottenham a 2-2 draw at Newcastle, denying Eddie Howe's side victory in a scrappy Premier League encounter. The Argentina defender's second equaliser of the match came after Newcastle had taken the lead twice, leaving Spurs manager Thomas Frank celebrating a morale-boosting result.
Newcastle dominated early proceedings, pressing high and forcing Tottenham into defensive errors. The home side took the lead through Bruno Guimarães, who replaced the injured Sandro Tonali at half-time. Guimarães fired a swerving shot from the edge of the area after Anthony Gordon's run and cross set up Nick Woltemade for a lay-off.
Romero responded quickly, heading home from a corner after Mohammed Kudus outwitted Lewis Hall. However, Newcastle regained the lead when Anthony Gordon converted a penalty following a VAR review that deemed Dan Burn had been fouled by Rodrigo Bentancur. Frank criticised the decision, calling it a mistake.
With time running out, Tottenham pushed forward. After Aaron Ramsdale punched a corner, Romero produced a spectacular overhead kick that flew into the net, securing a point for Spurs. The result halted Tottenham's run of four consecutive defeats in all competitions and eased pressure on Frank, whose animated touchline behaviour reflected the tension.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted his side were not at their best, saying: "It wasn't us at our best today. It's disappointing." Frank praised his team's character, stating: "I really liked the character of the team. This is a really difficult place to come and the performance showed fantastic mentality."
