Prince William was seen clutching the Europa League trophy after Aston Villa's 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the final in Istanbul on Wednesday evening. The Prince of Wales, a lifelong Villa fan, joined manager Unai Emery and the team in celebrations as the club secured its first major silverware in 30 years and a first European title since 1982.
Photographs showed William looking emotional after the match, wiping away tears as he celebrated with friends. The victory marked Villa's first major European final since the prince's birth and their first continental trophy since the European Cup in 1982.
Kensington Palace released a message from William congratulating the team: 'Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware!' He also gave a special shout-out to injured midfielder Boubacar Kamara, calling him 'an integral part of our team.'
Goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia at the end of the first half, followed by Morgan Rogers' strike in the 58th minute, secured the win. Villa captain John McGinn revealed that William visited the dressing room before the match, calling him 'a massive Villa fan' and adding, 'He is just a normal guy.'
A trophy parade is scheduled in Birmingham later on Thursday to celebrate the historic win.
