Owen Moffat says his man-of-the-match display in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Queen of the South proved he made the right choice in joining East Kilbride. The former Celtic and Morton winger started his debut in the League One opener and set up two goals on flag day for the League Two champions.
Impressive Debut
Moffat delivered the free-kick for Finlay Gray’s goal and teed up Darragh O’Connor for the fifth, making an instant impact at K-Park after signing last week.
The 24-year-old told Lanarkshire Live Sport: “The style of play here suits me so well and that’s why I made the decision to sign here. I knew I would see loads of the ball playing here and setting up two goals, it makes the decision I’ve made so much clearer and tells me that I have made the right move coming here.”
Team Performance
He praised the team’s overall display: “We want to go and dominate games every week and that’s what we did. I thought it was a really good performance from the team. There was a bit of slackness in the second half where we gave away possession a bit cheaply and they could have done a bit better in front of goal. But, on the whole, we dominated possession and what we worked on at training on Thursday night came to fruition, which is pleasing.”
On his own performance, he said: “I was really happy with my own performance, I got the ball so many times and I just tried to get on my full-back as much as I could and create chances. Unfortunately I didn’t get a goal but I am happy with two assists.”
Warning to Rivals?
Boss Mick Kennedy felt the result sent a statement to the rest of the league, but Moffat played it down: “I’m not sure if it is a warning. Before I came here, I knew what East Kilbride are capable of so I think teams in the league will expect us dominate possession and score goals like we did today.
“We hope to be up there with the full-time teams. We may be part-time but when we train on a Tuesday and Thursday it is super-intense. And it needs to because we are getting fewer sessions than the full-time clubs so we need to make it count when we are in. It is going to be a long season but this is a step in the right direction.”
Next Challenge
Kilby travel to Airdrieonians this Saturday, a pitch Moffat knows well from his time with Celtic B. He added: “I have played there loads with Celtic B, played in the Championship there with Morton, and I really like their pitch so I am looking forward to it. I want to help the team as much as I can, whether that is scoring or creating goals. I will do whatever I can. If I don’t score this weekend but I setup goals I will still be happy.”
