Stephen Maguire has become the latest high-profile snooker player to withdraw from the World Grand Prix, just days before the tournament began in Hong Kong on Tuesday. The World Snooker Tour confirmed the decision on Monday, with Ben Woollaston stepping in to face Shaun Murphy in the opening round.
Maguire's exit follows that of Ronnie O'Sullivan, who pulled out due to health reasons. O'Sullivan's place was taken by Hossein Vafaei, who will play China's Si Jiahui on Wednesday. O'Sullivan expressed his disappointment, stating he had been eager to compete but had to prioritise his health.
The two withdrawals come months after O'Sullivan urged World Snooker to appoint a dedicated welfare officer for players. He highlighted that many players suffer in silence and would benefit from having someone to talk to during tournaments. O'Sullivan has not played since the Shoot Out, missing events including the Scottish Open, Masters, and Welsh Open.
O'Sullivan's absence means he is now ineligible for the Players Championship and Tour Championship, with his next likely appearance at the World Championships at the Crucible.
