Newcastle United held a major off-site summit meeting in La Manga on Thursday, with Matthias Jaissle given the green light to make up to four new signings. PIF officials and director Jamie Reuben, who jetted into southern Spain, were present, and there is great optimism that the transfer window can end on a high.
Financial headroom confirmed
Newcastle have raised around £250m in transfer fees after the sales of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon, and now have 'the capacity' to make more moves in the remainder of the window. Jaissle will assess the squad in Spain and make decisions on fringe players, but he has been encouraged that both PIF and the powers that be are ready to finish the window strongly.
The vibe from the Toon camp is that Newcastle are 'far from finished', as made clear in a day-long summit at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. PIF and CEO David Hopkinson were told by finance chiefs that Newcastle's SCR situation is positive, with headroom to add stars to the current squad.
Targets and squad refresh
Newcastle are hoping to add a full-back, right-sided attacker, midfielder, and potentially a forward. The Magpies are well aware they need a 'refresh' and feel that, despite the tough departure of Eddie Howe, they can implement some interesting transfer plans.
While there has been noise of Joelinton wanting to quit, the Brazilian is still very much focused on the task in hand. Joelinton was in the same Hoffenheim squad as Jaissle back in the day and is totally on board despite the exit of his best pal Bruno Guimaraes.
Bruno's exit opens doors
Bruno's exit to Arsenal, paid in two instalments, will open the doors to a potential eye-opening signing. Newcastle will not go for a marquee signing, but replacements for Bruno with more guile are very much on the cards.
The new head coach told assembled reporters on Thursday in La Manga: "We have the capacity do something (sign players this window). Our sporting director is aware of that, so I'm sure when the season starts we will see some new faces."
