John Obi Mikel Slams Enzo Fernandez Over Chelsea Future Comments
Mikel Criticises Fernandez for Chelsea Exit Hints

Former Chelsea Star John Obi Mikel Blasts Enzo Fernandez Over Future Comments

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has launched a scathing attack on current Blues star Enzo Fernandez after the Argentine publicly cast doubt on his future at the club. The criticism comes after Fernandez made comments suggesting a potential exit from Stamford Bridge, sparking frustration among fans and former players alike.

Fernandez's Controversial Remarks

The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined Chelsea in a £108 million transfer in 2023, first raised eyebrows following the team's Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain. Fernandez insisted he did not know what would happen this summer, leaving his future uncertain.

While on international duty with Argentina, Fernandez further hinted at a possible departure during a livestream with Argentine channel SpiderCARP. When asked which other city he would like to live in, Fernandez replied: 'Madrid... I like Madrid very much... it's similar to Buenos Aires.'

Mikel's Furious Response

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel did not hold back in his criticism of Fernandez's comments. 'That's not a leader,' Mikel declared. 'If you have leaders that players respect and look up to, you wouldn't come out and make those statements because you'd be thinking, "How is this going to go down in the dressing room?"'

Mikel questioned how Fernandez, who wore the captain's armband in Chelsea's recent Champions League match, could make such statements without considering the senior players in the dressing room. 'He's looked at it and he's thinking, "Who is going to hold me responsible in that dressing room?" No one! The leadership is not there,' Mikel added.

Disrespect to Club and Fans

The former Nigerian international praised Fernandez's progress at Chelsea but expressed clear frustration with the timing and nature of the comments. 'For him to come out and make such a statement after we've been disgracefully dumped out of the Champions League, and you come out after wearing the captain's armband... no player is bigger than the football club,' Mikel stated.

Mikel emphasized that Fernandez should be grateful for playing at a club of Chelsea's stature. 'You're being paid handsomely to be at this football club, you should be grateful that you're playing for a club like Chelsea. When you come out and make that statement, that is very, very disrespectful to the football club and to the fans.'

Chelsea's Transition Period

The Blues remain in a period of transition following the sacking of Enzo Maresca earlier this season, with new boss Liam Rosenior enduring an indifferent start to his tenure. Rosenior's side are currently fighting to qualify for next season's Champions League, and failure to do so could make retaining top players more difficult.

Mikel highlighted how Chelsea might struggle to hold onto key players like Cole Palmer, Marc Cucurella, and Moises Caicedo if big clubs come calling. 'When they start getting phone calls from the likes of Real Madrid... Florentino Perez is a master in stealing players from clubs,' Mikel warned.

The former midfielder concluded by questioning Chelsea's current direction: 'That's why I question it and that's why I say: what is the objective? The objective of this club has to be winning, winning trophies.'
