Sportswear giant adidas has launched a special retro collection headlined by a Lionel Messi Argentina shirt, recreating the iconic strip worn at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The release comes months before the 2026 tournament, which could be the legendary forward's final World Cup appearance.
A Nostalgic Tribute to an Iconic Kit
The centrepiece of the new range is the Argentina adidas 2006 Home Shirt with Messi 19 printing, priced at £90. This is a faithful replica of the original kit worn by the national team during their campaign in Germany, which ended with a quarter-final defeat to the host nation.
Despite that tournament exit, the shirt's design has endured as a classic. Adidas states the jersey is "inspired by the team that played with calm, control and pure class." It features the instantly recognisable adidas Teamgeist pattern, now revived for modern fans.
Full Retro Collection Available for Fans
The launch is not limited to the home shirt. The collection also includes the dark blue Argentina adidas 2006 Away Shirt, also costing £90. Furthermore, adidas has added matching track tops to the line-up.
These include the Argentina adidas 2006 Home Track Top and Away Track Top, each priced at £100. Adidas describes the home top as blending heritage with modern comfort, featuring a loose fit, full zip, stand-up collar, and mesh details for breathability.
Fan Reaction and Availability
The collection has quickly sparked conversation among football supporters on social media. Initial impressions appear largely positive, with one fan on X calling it the "best Argentinian jersey from adidas." Another praised the kit's quality, simply rating it "100/10."
However, some have questioned the premium price point of the retro items. The shirts can be purchased with or without the Messi 19 printing. The full 2006 FIFA World Cup collection is available for purchase now through Fanatics, the Argentina Official Store, and adidas' own channels.
In its announcement, adidas said the Messi-edition jersey "brings back the iconic design worn by Argentina’s finest" and is "crafted for true football enthusiasts." They position it as a must-have piece that combines nostalgia with style, appealing to vintage and retro lovers.
