Ruben Amorim has declared that 20-year-old Kobbie Mainoo is 'the future of Manchester United', despite the midfielder missing the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle due to a calf injury. Mainoo has not started any of United's 17 Premier League matches this season, but Amorim offered his strongest backing yet for the young talent.
Amorim highlighted Mainoo's versatility, stating he can play as a No. 6 like Casemiro, in a three-man midfield, or in the No. 10 role occupied by Mason Mount. 'He is going to be the future of Manchester United,' Amorim said. 'He just needs to wait for each chance, and everything can change in football in two days.'
Earlier this month, Amorim was open to a loan move for Mainoo, but has now indicated that a departure would only be possible if a replacement is signed. 'If we are not getting someone, it is hard to leave,' he said. With captain Bruno Fernandes injured and Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Mainoo could see more game time when fit.
Amorim also hinted at a potential tactical shift from his preferred 3-4-3 system, admitting that perfecting it would require significant spending and time. 'I'm starting to understand that is not going to happen, so maybe I have to adapt,' he said.
Regarding Casemiro and Harry Maguire, both in the final year of their contracts, Amorim said no decisions have been made. Casemiro's £365,000-a-week salary makes him United's highest earner, and his contract includes a one-year option that is unlikely to be triggered. However, Amorim praised Casemiro's work ethic, saying, 'If everyone trains like him, we will be a top team.'
