Man Utd View Adam Wharton as 'Too Similar' to Mainoo, but Could Still Move for Three Midfielders

Manchester United view Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton as 'too similar' to Kobbie Mainoo, but could still pursue him if they opt to sign three midfielders rather than two this summer, according to reports. United are keen to strengthen in midfield and are anticipated to make Ederson their first signing of the Michael Carrick era, having agreed a £38million deal with Atalanta.

With Casemiro departing at the end of his contract in June and Champions League football requiring more depth, Ederson won't be the only midfield arrival. The Reds are also examining targets such as Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Brighton's Carlos Baleba.

Wharton is another name on United's wishlist, but the club believe his profile is too similar to Mainoo's and might avoid a move, as reported by The Telegraph. While his progressive passing is appreciated, he is not seen as a natural partner to Mainoo in United's 4-2-3-1 formation under Carrick.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also tracking Wharton, but his immediate focus is celebrating Crystal Palace's Conference League triumph. The 22-year-old shone in Wednesday's final against Rayo Vallecano, earning UEFA's Player of the Match award. After missing last year's FA Cup final celebrations due to a head injury, Wharton told TNT Sports: 'It's going to be big. I missed the FA Cup last year so I've got two celebrations to catch up on.'

Palace manager Oliver Glasner, previously linked with the United job, has guided the Eagles to three trophies since his arrival in February 2024. Wharton praised Glasner, saying: 'The difference he's made in two-and-a-half years is incredible. He's got to be one of the best managers Palace have ever had.'

Even if United fail to secure Wharton, he is expected to attract considerable interest from elsewhere, with the Blackburn-born midfielder regarded as one of the most gifted players in his position in world football.
