Man Utd Women 2025-26 WSL Preview: Ambitions and Challenges

Manchester United Women are preparing for a potentially historic season, with the chance to reach the Champions League group stages for the first time. However, they must first overcome Norwegian league leaders Brann in qualifying. The prospect of facing top European sides like Barcelona is exciting, but manager Marc Skinner's squad currently lacks depth to compete on multiple fronts.

United have made just two summer signings: Sweden internationals Fridolina Rolfö from Barcelona and Julia Zigiotti Olme from Bayern Munich. Rolfö, a multiple Champions League winner, is an eye-catching addition who can play left-back, wing-back or winger. Yet the squad remains thin, and the club are still seeking at least a defender and a forward before the transfer window closes.

The club's spending power lags behind rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, frustrating fans who see others investing more. United aim to run the team sustainably, but this limits their ability to close the gap. Despite this, they boast a strong starting XI and a solid defence—only Chelsea conceded fewer WSL goals last season—with a world-class goalkeeper and well-organised back four.

Skinner, the longest-serving current WSL manager since 2021, signed a new contract until 2027. He divides opinion but has led United to three consecutive FA Cup finals, winning in 2024. The absence of Sir Jim Ratcliffe from the 2024 final raised questions about ownership commitment, though there is alignment with director of football Jason Wilcox.

New signing Anna Sandberg, a 22-year-old Sweden left-back, impressed in Champions League qualifiers with clean sheets and attacking runs. United's England trio of Ella Toone, Grace Clinton and Maya Le Tissier also had strong summers. The team will aim for a top-three finish, but replicating last season's third place will be tough.
