According to reports, United believe their relationship with Sporting and the opportunity to work under former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim could prove decisive. However, the club cannot afford the Swede's lofty fee this month and are focusing on a summer move instead.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford appears closer to an exit, with Borussia Dortmund emerging as a serious option. The German club have held talks with the forward over a loan move, which could reunite him with former United manager Erik ten Hag, now serving as a shadow advisor at Dortmund. AC Milan had previously been considered favourites for his signature.
Should Rashford join Dortmund, United could pursue a deal in the opposite direction. Sky in Germany report that United are 'seriously interested' in Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old has scored 11 goals this season, but United face competition from Bayern Munich, who have opened talks with Gittens' representatives. A sale is thought more likely if Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League.
