Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas after their approach for Lewis Hall was rejected by Newcastle.
Standard Sport understands that Hall has long been admired by United, with strong interest in a summer deal as Michael Carrick seeks competition for Luke Shaw at left-back.
Newcastle reject Hall approach
However, according to Sky Sports, the Magpies have made it clear that the 21-year-old is not for sale, especially after already losing Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer. With captain Bruno Guimaraes on the verge of a £75m move to Arsenal, Newcastle have officially rejected United's initial enquiry for Hall.
As a result, United will turn their attention to other left-back targets. Despite links to Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, Standard Sport understands that the midfielder, who can play at left-back, will not be pursued this summer.
Salinas interest intensifies
Earlier this week, it was reported that United scouts were impressed by Salinas's performances at the Under-19 European Championships. The versatile defender has three years left on his contract at Racing and has also attracted interest from Barcelona.
Racing sporting director Chema Aragon has made it clear that Salinas can leave, but only if his €16m (£13.7m) release clause is triggered. "He has a contract with us, as you know," Aragon said. "So, if they don’t bring the release clause, you know what’s going to happen."
Barcelona hesitate
While United are reportedly ready to pay the release clause, it was initially thought that Salinas was prioritising a move to the LaLiga champions. However, Spanish outlet SPORT now reports that Barcelona want the 19-year-old but are not willing to pay his release clause.
As such, United could now be favourites to win the race for the left-back, with Salinas likely to accept a move to Old Trafford if Barcelona do not follow up their interest.
