Tottenham Hotspur have launched an internal review into their disastrous Premier League season, which saw them narrowly avoid relegation on the final day. The investigation, led by new performance director Dan Lewindon, aims to address the club's horrendous injury record, which has been the worst in the league, and includes a probe into whether the retractable pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has contributed to a spate of ACL injuries.
James Maddison, who recently returned from a fully torn anterior cruciate ligament, criticised the club's injury situation, stating, 'Our situation with the injuries has been worse than any other club. People try and say 'Oh, but we've got this and that', but ours is astronomical, and we need to look at why that is.' The midfielder's comments came after Tottenham's win over Everton, which secured their Premier League status.
The internal review, which has been ongoing behind the scenes, also includes bringing in a psychologist to banish 'Spursy' thinking and an investigation into the stadium's retractable pitch. Sporting director Johan Lange's future is in doubt, with the Dane potentially moving into a supporting role as the club seeks a world-class replacement.
Lewindon, who joined from the City Football Group in February, has found significant challenges within Tottenham's medical and performance departments, which have undergone huge turmoil in recent years. Key staff, including long-serving head of medicine Geoff Scott, have left, while new appointments have struggled to stabilise the department.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi has impressed the medical team with his clear and consistent approach, prioritising player welfare over results. Non-executive chairman Peter Charrington confirmed moves to 'modernise our football operation, with a significant focus on raising standards across medical and performance.'
