Alexis Mac Allister has sent a humorous message to former Liverpool teammate Darwin Nunez after the club confirmed the signing of Ronald Araujo. The Reds announced the arrival of Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona earlier this week as they looked to strengthen their defensive options.
Araujo's loan and permanent option
Araujo's move to Liverpool comes following the injury to Joe Gomez during pre-season, while Jeremy Jacquet is yet to get any minutes across the first four matches of the summer. Liverpool have the option of signing Araujo on a permanent deal next summer for around £47million, and the Uruguay international posted a message to Reds supporters on Instagram after the move was confirmed.
“Let’s go Reds,” Araujo wrote, which led to comments from past and present Liverpool players, including Mac Allister.
Mac Allister's playful exchange with Nunez
The Argentina international wrote in his comment: “Welcome! Finally one who makes good mates.” A mate is a popular drink in South America, and Nunez went on to send a message back to Mac Allister after his former teammate’s comment.
Nunez wrote: “Done, I wrote it down, I was the one who taught him how to make mates and roasts,” followed by a red love heart emoji and a laughing face emoji. Mac Allister then left another comment to reply to Nunez, where he said: “Don't get mad,” along with a laughing face emoji.
Teammates and upcoming fixtures
Nunez and Mac Allister spent two years as Liverpool teammates before the Uruguay international left Anfield last summer to complete a permanent move to Al Hilal. Mac Allister recently returned to the AXA Training Centre following his extended summer break after the World Cup, and will be hoping to get some minutes under his belt before the new Premier League season gets underway next week.
Liverpool will face Como in a double-header at Anfield on Sunday, and it remains to be seen if either Mac Allister or Araujo could feature. Speaking after being confirmed as a Liverpool player, Araujo explained why he decided to swap the Camp Nou for Merseyside.
He said: “I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. As I say, I’m super-happy to be here and excited to get started. I’m glad about the interest and it was the right move at the right time.”
