Australia's women's basketball team won Commonwealth Games gold despite the controversial ejection of star player Liz Cambage during the final against England. The 6ft 8in forward was sent off midway through the second quarter after receiving an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical foul, reportedly for comments and tossing the ball away.
Cambage had already scored 10 points in under nine minutes, laying the foundation for Australia's lead. Coach Sandy Brondello had earlier remarked that one great player does not make a great team, and her teammates proved that by stepping up after Cambage's departure.
Kelsey Griffin and Cayla George each scored 16 points, with George adding 10 rebounds, as the Opals secured a comfortable victory. England's Azania Stewart, who had clashed with Cambage, praised Australia's performance, calling them a world-class team.
The win sets up a potential double for Australia, with the men's team also reaching the final after a dominant victory over Scotland.
