Liverpool began their Premier League campaign with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield in a match that saw a stirring tribute to Diogo Jota and was overshadowed by an incident of racial abuse directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.
The game was a topsy-turvy affair between two attacking sides. Liverpool took a 2-0 lead before Bournemouth fought back to level at 2-2. However, the hosts showed resilience to score twice more and secure the win. Manager Arne Slot praised the spirit of his team, noting that despite losing several players in the summer, the mentality remained strong.
Slot also paid tribute to Jota, saying: "It was a great game to watch... this is what makes football great. I would have loved to bring Diogo Jota in at 2-2, but now I couldn't for terrible reasons. The fans and players did what he did for us so many times."
The match was paused in the first half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd aimed at Semenyo. Liverpool condemned the incident, stating: "We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society or football." The club confirmed the matter is subject to an ongoing police investigation.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola expressed disappointment, saying: "It's a shame because after a really great game of football we have to be talking about these things today. We should have been past this stage." Bournemouth captain Adam Smith added: "It's totally unacceptable... something has to be done. Taking a knee is having no effect."
The Premier League also issued a statement, confirming the incident will be fully investigated and offering full support to the player and both clubs.
