David Beckham has said parents must let their children “make mistakes”, a day after his son Brooklyn publicly aired grievances against the former England footballer and his wife, Victoria Beckham.
Brooklyn, 26, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram accusing his parents of controlling narratives in the press and attempting to “ruin” his relationship with his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham. He wrote: “I do not want to reconcile with my family.”
Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box on Tuesday, David Beckham did not directly address the dispute but spoke generally about parenting and social media. “Children are allowed to make mistakes. That’s how they learn,” he said. “You have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well.”
Brooklyn’s statement included specific allegations about his parents’ behaviour before and during his wedding to Nicola in 2022. He claimed his mother cancelled making Nicola’s dress at the last minute, that his parents pressured him to sign away rights to his name, and that his mother danced “inappropriately” on him during the first dance.
He also said his wife was not invited to his father’s 50th birthday party and that his brothers were “sent to attack me on social media” before blocking him. Brooklyn asserted that “Brand Beckham comes first” and that he has found peace since stepping away from his family.
