Keane blasts Man Utd keeper Lammens after Bournemouth loss

Roy Keane has criticised Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens after his error in the defeat to Bournemouth, saying the 24-year-old is "costing" the team.

Lammens came out of his goal to meet a pass in behind but was beaten to the ball by Evanilson, who fired into an empty net to make it 3-0. A Leny Yoro mistake led to Bournemouth's second goal, while Lammens was beaten at his near post by Rayan for the first.

Apart from a strong display against Everton, Lammens has largely struggled over the last few months despite a strong debut campaign. The Belgian joined for £18million under Ruben Amorim and was key to United securing Champions League qualification under Michael Carrick. He was unable to replicate that form at the World Cup, where his error led to Belgium's exit against Spain.

Keane's criticism

Speaking on the latest Stick to Football episode, Keane said: "Going back to Manchester United, the goalkeeper is costing them, isn't he? He was very good last year."

Paul Scholes has also questioned whether Lammens can help United compete for the Premier League title. He remarked on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast last month: "What team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper? Lammens might be that, I don't know, I think the jury's probably still out on that. You need a top class goalkeeper."

Scholes added: "You think of Liverpool's team with Alisson, City's teams, [David] Raya at Arsenal. Man United with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. They've all got brilliant, brilliant goalkeepers. You start from the back, of course you do."

Potential replacement and Carrick's future

Despite Lammens arriving just over 12 months ago, a ruthless change could be made, as other Premier League sides have done. Raya displaced Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal, while James Trafford was given a few weeks as Manchester City's No.1 before Gianluigi Donnarumma signed.

United have greater issues across the pitch, in the dugout and in the boardroom. Carrick's future remains unclear, but the club's hierarchy has given him the chance to reverse things. That challenge begins on Saturday lunchtime at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Speaking at his Thursday press conference, Carrick said: "I don't need any assurances from anyone. I totally get the position, I understand the job, I understand the responsibilities, I understand what comes with that, so I really don't need any assurances from anyone in that regard."

He added: "I said after the game I didn't expect anything. I was literally dealing with the performance, the result, what it was. There was no hiding the fact dynamics and the atmosphere in the stadium was a little bit different to normal and going through that and digesting that. Purely my mind was 'what do we need to do to improve things?'"
