Jaissle: Late Liverpool Penalty 'Not Good for Football'

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle criticised the stoppage-time penalty that denied his side a victory against Liverpool at St James' Park. Dominik Szoboszlai converted from the spot in the 99th minute to earn Liverpool a 1-1 draw after Lewis Hall was adjudged to have fouled substitute Victor Munoz.

Jaissle questions the decision

Jaissle insisted the decision was incorrect, describing the challenge as "really soft." He said: "For me, it was no penalty - it was a really soft one. If you give that, we will see many, many penalties. I don't think that Lewis can do anything else, he cannot just disappear on the field! It's a really soft penalty. If you give these penalties then you have to give a lot in this season and I'm not sure if that's good for football."

The result meant Jaissle missed out on a statement win in his first match in charge at St James' Park. Newcastle had looked set to take all three points, with Alexander Isak enduring a frustrating return to the ground as his every touch was booed by the home supporters.

Wissa praised but more signings wanted

Jaissle praised forward Yoane Wissa but admitted the striker could have sealed the win. "It was an amazing performance - even if he could have killed the game! Their heads are a little down but we know we had many challenges, we're in a huge transition phase at the moment."

The Newcastle boss also indicated he hopes to add more players before the transfer window closes. "I hope so, today the lads were amazing, a young squad but we have some needs we know internally and we keep that internally. You can count them on one hand."

Szoboszlai and Iraola react

Liverpool match-winner Szoboszlai said the team showed their fighting spirit under new manager Andoni Iraola. "More than 50,000 fans in the stadium against you. You can't hear your own voice. That's why I love football and that's why I am doing it. We will never give up. I can guarantee you that. We have to fight every time - all day long for 90 minutes. Everybody who came off the bench also made an impact as well today. We need the whole squad and we need to be ready."

Iraola acknowledged that Isak felt the weight of the boos but praised his response. "I think he expected a little bit of the atmosphere. It's not a big surprise for him, He has tried everything. He has given us good positions on the ball, probably has had a couple of situations to finish inside the box but probably not the clearest we wanted. But I value that he has continued pushing and fighting in the game and I think it was a good step for Alex."
