Alan Shearer has expressed disbelief that Alexander Isak did not secure a release clause in his Newcastle United contract, as the striker's relationship with the club deteriorates amid interest from Liverpool. The Magpies legend described Isak's public statement as "chucking petrol on the fire" and questioned the advice given to the player.
Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, signed a six-year contract without a formal "get-out" option. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said that if the 25-year-old had plans to leave, he should have insisted on a written exit clause. "You can't just accept verbal promises," he added.
The discontent reportedly stems from a promised contract extension last summer that fell through due to changes in administration and concerns over Profit and Sustainability Rules. Isak maintains he made his desire to leave clear after the breakdown, though Newcastle dispute this. Liverpool have seen a £110m bid rejected, with Newcastle standing by their £150m valuation.
Isak was left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia and sat out their Premier League opener against Aston Villa. He continues to train alone, with only 10 days left in the transfer window. Liverpool remain interested, but any deal would likely require Newcastle to soften their stance. The club insist Isak will stay, despite reports he has vowed never to play for the Magpies again.
