In extraordinary scenes at Otaki in New Zealand, jockey Masa Hashizume was thrown from his mount Road To Paris just yards from the winning post in the Group 3 Jennian Homes Wellington Stakes on Sunday.
The three-year-old gelding, sent off as favourite, jinked sharply to the right approaching the line, dislodging Hashizume who skidded across the finish. The incident severely hampered the horse behind, Ammirati, ridden by Matt Cartwright, who was knocked off his stride.
Despite the chaos, Ammirati clung on to win the race worth £66,000. The result stood after Tulsa King's handler asked stewards to reverse the placings. Road To Paris was reported unscathed, and Hashizume was cleared to ride again after medical attention.
The winner, an offspring of Circus Maximus, became a third Wellington Stakes winner for trainer Stephen Marsh. Stable representative Dylan Johnson said: 'It’s a funny old game... an unusual way to win the race, but it’ll go in the book.'
