Haydock Hole Mystery Deepens as Concert Looms
Haydock Hole Mystery Deepens Ahead of Tom Grennan Gig

Investigations into a mysterious hole that appeared on Haydock racecourse are ongoing, with officials still unable to determine the cause or set a date for racing to resume. The issue, which led to the abandonment of three races on May 23, has prompted a team of experts to probe the problem.

Racing Disrupted

Three races at Haydock were abandoned on Saturday, May 23, after the hole was discovered during the first race. Meetings scheduled for Friday and Saturday this week were relocated to Wolverhampton and Carlisle respectively. Clerk of the course Daniel Cooper confirmed that work began on Tuesday, but five days later, there is no clear timeline for when fixtures at the Jockey Club-owned venue will resume.

Cooper told ITV Racing: "I think it's too soon to discuss those fixtures because we are taking this as an investigation at the moment. It's frustrating certainly for me not to have an answer yet. These things do not happen overnight. We need a little bit more time to understand the cause and then we should be able to plan ahead accordingly."

Concert Plans Unaffected

Haydock's next scheduled event is a concert by Tom Grennan on June 20. The singer, who achieved a hat-trick of number one albums last summer, is still set to perform. In a Q&A with The Jockey Club, Grennan said playing outdoors in better weather "feels like a festival." He added that he has never had a winner at the races, admitting: "I'm not really a betting man, to be honest. I just pick a name that I like and hope for the best."

On the day the hole was discovered, racing was delayed for 90 minutes after the John and Thady Gosden-trained Friendly Soul was pulled up during the first race. After much deliberation, the stewards abandoned three races on the round course and allowed sprint races to be transferred to the inner track. Tickets remain available for all enclosures at the scheduled concert.

Presenter Megan Nicholls told Cooper: "A few more answers certainly to come but thank you very much for joining us this morning. We really look forward to getting back to Haydock as soon as possible and fingers crossed it will be the last of any issues you do have to worry about."
