Erling Haaland's £100K Auction Purchase Becomes Generous Donation to Hometown
Haaland Donates £100K Auction Book to Inspire Hometown Youth

Manchester City's prolific striker Erling Haaland has made headlines not for his goal-scoring prowess, but for a remarkable act of generosity. The Norwegian football star recently splashed out £100,000 at an auction before immediately giving away his significant purchase.

A Historic Acquisition

Haaland spent the substantial sum on a unique edition of Snorre Sturlason's Royal Sagas from 1594, making it the most expensive Norwegian book ever sold. The striker, alongside his father Alfie, purchased the rare manuscript for 1.3 million kroner in December, despite openly admitting he is not typically an avid reader.

Inspiring Future Generations

"I have never been a big reader, but I want the book to always be open, so that you can read about those who came from my area, from Bryne and Jæren," Haaland explained in a press release. "I've been lucky enough to live out my dream through football, and I know not everyone gets that chance. Books give so many more people the chance to dream big, see new possibilities and find their own path."

The book, which details the history of medieval Norse kings with tales of Viking rulers, queens, farmers, and warriors, will be placed on permanent public display at the Bryne library in Haaland's home municipality of Time, Norway. This donation fulfills the striker's wish to inspire youngsters from his hometown to pursue their ambitions.

A Generous Gesture

The auction was conducted by Norwegian businessman and bibliophile Johan Fredrik Odfjell, with Time Municipality only recently announcing that Haaland and his father were the purchasers. The book represents the sole surviving copy of the two-volume 1594 manuscript, and under the donation's conditions, it must remain permanently accessible to the public.

"We are extremely grateful for this incredibly generous gift," said Andreas Vollsund, the mayor of Time Municipality. "Erling and Alfie are giving us the opportunity to do one of the most important things we can do for our young people: give them the joy of reading."

Football and Philanthropy

Haaland, currently on international duty with Norway preparing to face Switzerland after a recent 2-1 loss to the Netherlands, has demonstrated that his influence extends beyond the football pitch. The 25-year-old former Borussia Dortmund striker is also reported to have recently acquired a rare Mercedes Maybach Virgil Abloh, a limited-edition vehicle costing over £400,000 and named after the late fashion designer.

This philanthropic act highlights Haaland's commitment to his roots and his desire to provide educational opportunities for future generations. By transforming a personal acquisition into a public resource, the Manchester City icon has created a lasting legacy that may inspire countless young Norwegians to explore history, literature, and their own potential.
