Bruno Guimaraes hopes winning silverware with Arsenal will help him move on from his World Cup disappointment. The midfielder was part of the Brazil side knocked out by Norway in the last-16 over the summer.
Guimaraes had a first-half penalty saved while the match was still goalless. Norway went on to win 2-1, meaning Brazil failed to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time since 1990.
‘It’s a wound, a scar’
“It’s a very bad feeling,” Guimaraes said at a press conference, after joining up with his national team for the first time since the tournament. “Missing a penalty is part of football, but you’re never really ready for it to happen.
“Moving on from what happened, obviously it’s a wound, a scar, it’s very recent, it still hurts me, it still hurts a lot that this happened. But it’s part of football.
“May I learn from my mistakes. Often you learn from victory, but normally we learn from defeat, from what didn’t work out. I will continue my daily struggle, my dreams… If there’s another penalty and it’s awarded to me, I won’t hide, I’ll take it again a thousand times, because representing this shirt means a lot to me, it’s always been my biggest dream.
“It wasn’t a good moment, I suffered a lot, but it’s time to move on. You can’t change the past, but you can change the future.”
Arsenal move and silverware aim
Guimaraes joined Arsenal from Newcastle in a £75 million move after the World Cup. He has suffered from a couple of minor injuries, meaning he has so far made only one Premier League start for his new club.
However, Guimaraes is determined to make an impact for Mikel Arteta’s side and ensure he gets his hands on some silverware this season.
“I just arrived at Arsenal, so I'm very focused,” Guimaraes said. “I want to win a championship there, I want to play, I want to make my mark with this new shirt. But ultimately, the future belongs to God.”
