Grealish's Everton future in doubt after training breach

Jack Grealish's Everton future is uncertain after he was dropped from the squad for a breach of club discipline, just 58 days after rejoining the club on loan.

The on-loan Manchester City star missed the Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle on Thursday night. It is understood that Grealish did not attend a training session between the 2-0 defeat by Arsenal on Saturday and the cup game five days later.

Moyes tight-lipped on Grealish absence

Everton manager David Moyes refused to elaborate on the reasons for Grealish's omission. "It is something I don't want to speak too much about," he said after the game.

However, his comments on the team's 3-1 win hinted at his feelings: "The one thing about Everton is that they have got real good values, all the players stand behind it and accept the values, on the pitch and off the pitch."

Contract situation adds pressure

The incident comes at a difficult time for Grealish, who is in the final year of his £300,000-a-week contract with City. His encouraging start at Everton last season was cut short by a foot injury in January, and his return in September was seen as unfinished business.

Grealish contributed two goals and six assists in 20 appearances in the first half of the 2025/26 campaign. After signing once more, he said: "It feels so good. I'm so happy. I think I'm at my best at everything in life, not just football, when I feel loved. That's what the manager has given me, what my teammates have given me and especially what the fans have given me."

Moyes had earlier this season described Grealish as "mature" and wanted him to be "a senior professional and a role model" to young wingers Tyrique George and Tyler Dibling.

Fan favourite and community involvement

Grealish has become a favourite among Everton fans, not just for his performances but also for his off-pitch community work. Days before being dropped, he made a £10,000 donation to Everton fan Leon Skapars, who is battling an aggressive form of kidney cancer.

Leon's wife Crystal told The Guide Liverpool: "When I realised it was Jack Grealish who had donated, I burst into tears. I was completely overwhelmed. To think that Jack has taken the time to support Leon and our family is just incredible. We're so grateful to him."

Despite suffering a season-ending injury in January, Grealish stayed with Everton for his rehabilitation and followed all of their pre-season matches after returning to City. He would reportedly like to sign permanently for Everton as a free agent when his City contract expires, but it remains to be seen whether this recent indiscretion affects that possibility.
