Jack Grealish was left out of Everton's 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup fourth round due to a breach of club discipline, with the midfielder facing a hefty fine for his conduct.
Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry secured the victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, setting up a quarter-final tie against Fleetwood Town.
Unauthorised absence from training
Grealish, who missed the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal last Saturday through illness, was not included in David Moyes' squad for the cup match because of the disciplinary issue. It is understood the 31-year-old was disciplined for an unauthorised absence from training.
The Times report that Grealish faces a 'hefty fine' for his conduct.
Moyes confirms club decision
Moyes declined to give details of the matter after the win over Newcastle.
"Well, you probably know I am not going to give any details and it is a club decision," Moyes said. "I support the decision but it's a club decision. It is something I don't want to speak too much about. I feel as if the club are the people you should go to if you are looking for more on it."
Everton's press officer intervened when Moyes was asked whether Grealish would be included in the squad for the Premier League game against Newcastle at St James' Park on Monday night.
Loan move from Manchester City
Grealish re-joined Everton in the summer transfer window on a second successive loan from Manchester City, a move costing the Toffees around £12 million per season. The player, signed by City in a £100m deal from Aston Villa in 2021, will see his contract with the club expire at the end of the season.
