Gordon divides Barcelona fans after PSG defeat

Anthony Gordon is already facing criticism from Barcelona fans after a subdued performance in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The former Newcastle United forward failed to register a single shot, completed none of his three attempted dribbles, won just one of nine duels, and lost possession nine times during the match.

Despite the difficult night, the England international did have seven touches inside the opposition penalty area, created a big chance, and recorded two key passes. He was one of four Barcelona players to create a big chance in the game.

Comparisons with Marcus Rashford

Gordon replaced Marcus Rashford at Barcelona this summer, and fans are now drawing comparisons between the two players. Some supporters are already pining for the Manchester United forward.

One fan wrote on X: "I miss when I still had a reliable left winger in my team. Now I'm stuck with white English Garnacho. #Rashford"

Another supporter said: "If we're being honest, Rashford is still the better option for Barcelona than Gordon, who is struggling to do even the basics. ... Rashford could at least get shots away and create problems for defenders, while Gordon's decision-making and passing have been frustrating to watch."

Mixed reactions from supporters

However, the verdict is far from unanimous. One observer replied: "With just one game, you all are already rating him down; what inconsistent fans."

Others defended the forward, saying: "It's too early to tell. Gordon fits Hansi Flick's style more; he's a pressing machine."

His work rate has also been questioned. Another fan claimed: "On several occasions, he simply jogged back after the player he was supposed to be tracking, leaving [Joao] Cancelo exposed against [Desire] Doue and [Achraf] Hakimi in the first half. Even when he presses, there's a lack of aggression and urgency. He approaches defenders too slowly."

Bright spots and next challenge

Despite the criticism, Gordon completed the full 90 minutes for the first time as a Barcelona player. He also scored his first two goals in back-to-back games after the international break.

His debut season began with four assists in Barcelona's opening four La Liga matches, though he has now gone seven matches without one. He did create a big chance against PSG.

Next up is the first El Clásico of the season, with Barcelona hosting Real Madrid at Camp Nou. A win would give Barcelona a nine-point lead over their rivals and extend their perfect start to the league campaign.
