Galatasaray general secretary Eray Yazgan has made controversial remarks following the racist abuse directed at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate. The abuse occurred after a collision with Victor Osimhen during the Champions League last-16 match.
Yazgan accused Liverpool of failing to apologise for an injury suffered by Galatasaray's Noa Lang, who required emergency surgery on his thumb after an incident involving LED boards. He stated: 'Liverpool has not offered a single apology to our club or our player. This is unacceptable.'
The Galatasaray chief also claimed Liverpool was trying to divert attention by raising 'imaginary statements' about racist abuse against Konate. Liverpool had previously condemned the racist comments directed at their player.
UEFA has launched an investigation into the incident that caused Lang's injury. A spokesperson said: 'UEFA will be reviewing the pitch-side set up, including LED boards at all upcoming matches to identify any potential comparable risks.'
Yazgan confirmed that Galatasaray has contacted UEFA and plans to file a compensation lawsuit. Lang posted on Instagram that his surgery went well, while Liverpool officials were seen near the incident site after the match.
