In a heartwarming moment that brought some much-needed moral goodness back to Turkish football, a player from Istanbul Yurdum Spor revived a seagull that had been struck by a ball during a seventh-tier match. The incident occurred in the 22nd minute of a title-deciding clash against Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar, when goalkeeper Muhammed Uyanik's clearance hit a low-flying gull, causing it to spiral to the ground.
Istanbul's bearded captain, Gani Catan, immediately rushed to help the stricken bird, ignoring the loose ball. In a jaw-dropping moment, he began performing CPR on the seagull. "It was a reflex reaction," Catan told Turkish media. Despite having no medical training, he continued pumping the bird's chest for a considerable time until he saw a flicker in its eyes and a twitch of its webbed feet.
Catan then rolled the bird into the recovery position and carried it to a concerned coach on the sidelines. The match continued, with Catan's team ultimately losing the title in a tense penalty shootout. "We missed out on the championship, but it's a wonderful thing to have helped save a life," said the heroic midfielder. "This was more important than the championship." Reports indicate the gull is alive but still unable to fly due to a damaged wing.
