Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of England Lions with immediate effect, ahead of his winter role in Australia's Big Bash League. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the decision on Friday evening.
Reasons for departure
The 48-year-old former all-rounder had been in charge of England's second string since September 2024. He had been given permission to leave this winter's Lions tour of South Africa early to join Sydney Thunder in the BBL. However, Flintoff decided that the BBL job, along with TV work and family commitments, meant he could not fully commit to the Lions.
In an ECB statement, Flintoff said: "Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop."
Reaction and replacement
The departure is abrupt, coming just a week after Rob Key, England men's team director, defended his former teammate and close friend amid criticism of Flintoff's role. Key said: "We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him do it. I thought it was disrespectful for people to say that he shouldn’t have been doing it. He’s been outstanding in that job, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him."
Flintoff had been negotiating with counties over player availability for the quasi-Lions XI set to face Pakistan's Test squad in a four-day warm-up match at Beckenham starting Wednesday. Mike Yardy, head coach of England Under-19s, will now lead that team, officially named the Professional County Club Select XI, using young players not involved in the Hundred or not required by their counties in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
England Test squad concern
Meanwhile, England's Test squad for the series opener against Pakistan at Headingley has an injury concern. Opener Emilio Gay retired hurt while batting for Durham on Friday due to an apparent shoulder issue. Ollie Pope, a middle-order batter, is the reserve in the squad, so a full-time opener may be needed if Gay's injury is serious.
