Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes criticised his team's performance after a 2-0 Premier League defeat to newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium. The Reds were overwhelmed by the hosts and fell behind in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi slammed home the rebound after Oli McBurnie forced an excellent save from Senne Lammens.
Second goal and second-half rally
Hull doubled their lead before the break as Nobel Mendy guided in Regan Slater's free-kick on his debut. United attempted to respond in the second half, with Marcus Rashford looking bright and Bryan Mbeumo creating a couple of opportunities, but they failed to threaten the hosts enough.
Fernandes demands more aggression
Speaking to Premier League Productions after the match, Fernandes said: "Same mistakes as we did last season every away game. We give too much of the ball to them, in the first 20 minutes the goalkeeper had more touches on the ball, too much time."
He added: "We need to press a little bit more, be more aggressive, and set-plays - we need to work on it, to be more aggressive and try not to concede these types of goals. We knew before the game that [set-pieces] would be a big part of their game."
Fernandes also noted Hull's tactical switch: "They played a full pre-season with a back four. They went against us with a back five, also to have some height, also for these moments because they could get a chance from it and defend well from our set-pieces. The most frustrating thing is that we lost the game."
Carrick's assessment
Hull manager Michael Carrick said: "Some was okay, bits to improve on. It was never going to be perfect today but going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult."
He added: "With a promoted team at home, we can't give them much. We had moments but not that spark to put the chances away. We're bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won't knock us."
