Merlin Rohl and Thierno Barry both earned 8/10 as Everton came from behind to beat Hamburg 2-1 at Volksparkstadion, but it was substitute Braiden Graham who produced the decisive moment in stoppage time. Graham intercepted a pass from Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes to Daniel Elfadli and his cross was turned into his own net by Jordan Torunarigha.
Goalkeeper and Defenders
Mark Travers (off 80 min) - 7: He made a sharp save from Rayan Philippe early in the second half and benefited from Hamburg's poor finishing in the first period, when they repeatedly attacked down Everton's right. With Jordan Pickford absent, Travers has been a steady presence in pre-season.
Vitalii Mykolenko (off 80) - 6: Read Bakery Jatta's central run well to deny a clear chance. After being spun by Patson Daka, he was relieved to see the shot hit the side netting, but moments later he could not get across in time to prevent Daka's equaliser after Branthwaite stepped out.
Jarrad Branthwaite (off 70) - 6: Missed good chances in both halves and stepped out early for Daka's goal, leaving space that Hamburg exploited. The positive was his growing fitness.
James Tarkowski - 6: Booked in the second half after losing possession to Philippe on halfway, then hauled him back to stop a dangerous attack. Hamburg did not punish him from the resulting free-kick, but it was a clumsy moment from the captain.
Jake O'Brien (off 90) - 6: Battled admirably again at right-back, though Hamburg had plenty of joy down his side in the first half. He was strong in the air but fortunate in the second half when his header back to Travers was almost intercepted by Daka. Has shown he is better suited to centre-back.
Midfield and Attack
Tyrique George (off 70) - 6: Trying hard to replace Iliman Ndiaye, he displayed lovely footwork to beat players but could not produce the final pass or shot in the final third.
Hayden Hackney (off 70) - 6: Made a crucial block to deny Louis Lemke after a cut-back inside the box. He was often frustrated by the movement around him and needed more help in midfield.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (off 90) - 7: A bustling performance as he tried to force the issue for Everton. Buzzed up and down the pitch but was often crowded out and caught late by Hamburg players. He still carried the attacking burden, delivering a brilliant cross in the 70th minute that Barry chose not to attack for a tap-in, and later was clattered after playing a brave through ball following good link-up play.
Tim Iroegbunam (off 70) - 5: A bit of everything in his fourth straight midfield start. Warned early by referee Harm Osmers, then booked for halting a Hamburg attack. He showed his ability to turn defence into attack when he skipped past two players and set up Rohl. Would likely have been sent off for a cynical foul on the halfway line in a competitive game.
Merlin Rohl - 8: A nice touch and a great finish to open the scoring on his return to Germany. He was a willing runner, chasing balls down the right with his pace and delivering useful crosses, one of which forced Warmed Omari to divert against the bar. He later moved into midfield after a spate of substitutes and is having a good pre-season.
Thierno Barry (off 80) - 8: An enigma. He started the move for Rohl's goal by hustling defenders into losing the ball, and although his assist came from a heavy touch, he kept his composure to back-heel into Rohl's path. He missed a tap-in by not committing to a Dewsbury-Hall cross, and mis-controlled a ball over the top, but recovered to turn his man and force a good save from Heuer Fernandes. Not always convincing, but worked hard and had an impact.
Substitutes
Michael Keane (on 70) - 6: Steady and strong in the air.
Tyler Dibling (on 70) - No rating: Came on the right but tucked inside as planned. Had little chance to run at the opposition, but chased down defenders and will benefit from first-team exposure after a tough season.
Harrison Armstrong (on 70) - 6: Intelligent play helped Everton turn defence into attack, using his composure and ability to spot the right pass, sending Adam Aznou free down the left.
Carlos Alcaraz (on 70) - 7: Immediately added urgency and intensity to Everton's attack from the left of midfield in his best pre-season contribution so far.
