Everton secured a 3-1 pre-season friendly victory over Newcastle United in Edinburgh, with Thierno Barry scoring his third goal of the summer and Tyrique George adding a fine finish. The win came as Iliman Ndiaye returned to the squad following his extended post-World Cup break.
Barry leading the line
Barry, who signed for £27million from Villarreal over 13 months ago, has now scored three goals in pre-season, with an assist as well. His latest strike came after a surging run from the halfway line, having been floored by Lewis Hall before getting back up to finish with aplomb.
The 6ft 5in Frenchman had a mixed debut season in English football, waiting 17 matches for his first Everton goal. He enjoyed a midseason purple patch but was unable to regain a regular starting spot until late in the campaign. He was also booed by sections of his own fanbase following an Arsenal spat.
George stakes a claim
Tyrique George, who drew a blank in 11 loan appearances for Everton last season, capped another encouraging display with an assured finish. The 20-year-old took the ball with his back to goal from a pass by Harrison Armstrong, who registered his second assist of the evening.
George scored six times in 37 matches for previous club Chelsea and, with Ndiaye's return, faces increased competition for places. The early pre-season friendlies gave George and Tyler Dibling opportunities to shine, and George has stepped up to the plate.
Ndiaye settling back in
Ndiaye, who has been linked with a move to Al-Hilal, has reportedly turned down interest from the Saudi club, according to his father. Everton maintain the player is not for sale, and former team-mate Idrissa Gueye declared on his return to the German training camp: "Here to stay."
Ndiaye has publicly expressed a desire to play Champions League football and has turned down several offers of a new contract from Everton. The club secured Brennan Johnson in a swap for Dwight McNeil, but letting Ndiaye go would be a major blow.
Travers proves able deputy
With Jordan Pickford still away following his World Cup heroics, Mark Travers has impressed in goal during Everton's six friendlies. The Republic of Ireland international, who joined from Bournemouth, was restricted to two Carabao Cup outings last season.
Travers made several strong saves, especially when the game was still 0-0, but was denied a clean sheet by Harvey Barnes' late consolation. Pickford, described as Everton's best goalkeeper since Neville Southall, will return to the side when available.
